Tsomoriri

Overview

Tso Moriri Lake, also known as Mountain Lake or Lake Moriri, is a salty lake fed by springs and mountain snowmelt. It is at an elevation of 4,530 meters on the Changthang plateau in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The lake is 26 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide at its widest point. Because the lake is a Ramsar Wetland site, it is also known as Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve.
Because it is in a wetland reserve, you cannot pitch a tent there, but you can choose to stay in one of the camps surrounding Tso Moriri Lake, which offers a breathtaking view of the lake. If you intend to camp alone, please do not do so anywhere near the lake. Tso Moriri is a designated wetland reserve, and camping near the lake is prohibited. Please do so near a campsite or a local Dhaba if you want to camp. You could even spend a small fee on the existing grounds to secure a spot.
You will need an ILP- Inner Line Permit to visit the lake because it is considered part of the inner line. You will require obtaining a Protected Area Permit if you are a foreign national. Tso Moriri Lake in Ladakh is a natural beauty behemoth with its deep blue waters and lush green surroundings.
Geographically, Tso Moriri is in one of India’s most remote areas, inhabited by the Changpa nomads of Ladakh. The rough terrain and dirt road make it difficult for visitors to enjoy a comfortable ride. In contrast, Tso Moriri is among the two most visited lakes in the Ladakh region of the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. While Pangong Tso is the more well-known of the two, Tso Moriri manages to take visitors’ breath away with its tranquil beauty.
Tso Moriri is a perfect birding tourist attraction for avid birders, photographers, bird watchers, and nature lovers, in addition to dry landscapes and high mountain peaks. Trekking is another popular activity in the vicinity of Tso Moriri. You can trek from Rumtse to Tso Moriri and camp overnight. Kamar, Tisaling and Rachungkharu are the campsites. Every camping spot along this trekking route is spectacular. It has stunning scenic vistas and two incredible alpine lakes, which add to the beauty of this trek. The route includes:
Passing through high altitude regions and all of the descents and ascents make this a difficult trek. Rachungkharu is the only camping ground where you can find the Changpas during the summer.
Due to the high temperature in other months, the lake experiences extremely cold winters. Because of snowstorms, the lake remains frozen in winters, and no outsiders are permitted to visit. Thus, the perfect time to visit this lake is June to August. The weather is pleasant enough to enjoy the breathtaking views without chilling. Another advantage of staying in these months is that public transportation is also available.
