What to Expect During Winter Spiti Trip

Since Spiti is a harsh desert, the winters there can be brutally cold. Dry winters with temperatures well below zero are typical (An average of – 10 Degrees and can go down to – 25 Degrees at certain places). Due to this freezing temperatures possibility of Running water is not there as everything liquid is frozen. Therefore, one must be ready to survive for a few days with very primitive amenities, such as using a dry pit toilet. The following information should be kept in mind before visiting Spiti in the dead of winter.

Clothing
In order to stay warm in this harsh climate, layering is essential. It is advised that when dressed for extreme cold, one should wear at least two layers on the legs and four layers on the upper body. When inside, sit close to the fireplace; when outside, cover your head, feet, and hands. It is necessary to wear thermals with the proper layering of jackets, warm t-shirts, down jackets, windbreakers, warm hats, gloves, and warm socks.
Washrooms
In Spiti, showering is not an option due to the lack of running water, and taking a bath in the subzero temperatures is dangerous for visitors. However, hot water will be provided for brushing and cleaning. As an alternative to cleaning yourself, we advise using a wet towel scrub and packing plenty of tissue rolls for the journey. Dry pit toilets will be used, which may not be a pleasant experience but are hygienic because the pit is deep and there isn't much of a stench because everything is frozen. Please refrain from using your phone when using the restroom.
Limited Food Outlets
It's crucial to bring food with you when travelling in the winter because there aren't many places to eat along the journey and they're typically extremely far apart. We advise bringing along plenty of packages of your favourite snacks, such as chips, dry fruit, chocolate, and biscuits. One needs to be prepared with all of these items in case we get stranded on the trip due to the remoteness of the area and unexpected weather conditions.
Medical Facilities
Being a rural area, Spiti has inadequate medical services. However, there is a hospital in Kaza, although one might not receive proper care there owing to a lack of amenities or occasional lack of electricity, and communication is also a problem because the road may become blocked in the event of snowfall. Our staff will have a basic first aid kit and an oxygen cylinder on hand, but we advise everyone to carry their own small medical bag filled with basic, doctor-prescribed medications for headaches, stomach aches, painkillers, fever, and upset stomach. Make sure to bring your prescription medications with you if you have any pre-existing medical conditions because you might not be able to find them in Kaza or the surrounding area. For immediate major problems
Acute Mountain Sickness

Spiti is a High Altitude Cold Dessert with the average altitude being 11000 Feet AMSL. This makes the possibility of contracting AMS very high. However, we will be halting at lower altitudes before we reach Spiti acclimatizing on the way, yet there are chances one may get AMS in the thin air of Spiti. Symptoms of AMS include:

-Nausea

-Head Ache

-Breathlessness

-Disorientation

-Lack Of Appetite

On the onset of such symptoms, seek immediate assistance and the only way to counter AMS is to descend to lower altitude and as soon as possible.

Drinking lots of water and keeping yourself nourished is important to avoid AMS. Also, avoiding exertion while in a high altitude region is important as heavy physical activity can lead to AMS in certain cases. In case you have asthma, please carry your inhaler with you or, in case of any other similar thing (including Asthma), please consult your doctor before visiting the High Altitude regions.

Fuel & Banking Related Services

There are limited number of ATM’s in Spiti the availability of the same keeps on reducing, on the way to Spiti till around Pooh one will find ATM’s along the way in Spiti ATM’s are only in Tabo & Kaza which may or may not be in working conditions. So its recommended that one carries cash as per their requirement before we venture to Spiti.

There is only one Fuel Pump at Kaza which operates between 11:00 Am till 5:00 Pm and there is no surety if the fuel will be available as in bad weather conditions the pump will not operate. Therefore it is recommended that one carries spare can of fuel in case of emergency and refuel the vehicles when one gets an opportunity to do so.

Roads & Snow Conditions

Spiti lies in Trans Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh, the high altitude and lack of vegetation makes driving or travelling in Spiti unpredictable and the activity involves risk of injury and even death as weather conditions are unpredictable. Chances of roads getting blocked in bad weather are high so please be flexible with your schedule as one may get stuck here for any duration ranging from a day to several days. The roads in winter are covered with snow and icy conditions can be found at many sections making it a treacherous. Though the snow cutting and road clearing machines and equipment is deployed along the way however in any event of road block one may have to wait for hours till the machinery arrives. Though precipitation is not very heavy in this region but there are certain sections along the road which receive heavy to very heavy snowfall causing change in the travel route and itinerary and even lead to us missing out on certain sightseeing points.
