Overview
Photoksar is a remote village in Ladakh located between two major high altitude passes of the Union Territory of Ladakh. If you have a limited time to explore Unseen and Offbeat places in Ladakh, you should visit Photoksar, a village with only 250 people (2011 census). The main source of income for the villagers is agriculture and sheep.
Photoksar is approximately 165 kilometres from Leh on the Leh-Srinagar Highway (NH-1). After 10 kilometres (around 100 kilometres from Leh), there is a left turn towards Wanla Village. If you come from Srinagar, the diversion point will be on your right after about 5 kilometres from Lamayuru.
The distance from the Wanla diversion point on NH-1 Photoksar is only about 60 kilometres, but it takes about the same amount of time to travel from Leh to Wanla. After crossing Wanla, you will arrive in Phonjila. The roads to Phonjila are still passable, but the journey to Photoksar will be difficult.
After approximately 30 kilometres from Phonjila, you will arrive at the highest point of this journey- Sirsir La Top (15,620 ft). The Sisir-La pass is only open during the summer. As a result, this village is cut off from the outside world during the winter because there is only one route to or from it. Drive further and beyond the pass for a spectacular view of Photoksar.
Photoksar is a remote village with only about 50 residents, so there are no hotels or guest houses. However, you can easily find homestays or pitch your tent with the permission of local authorities and by their rules.
